Day 2: What do you believe is your greatest strength as a teacher?
I believe my greatest strength is my versatility. Change has always been and will always be a recurring major theme in my life. Because of it, I have learned from a very early age that an optimistic attitude and open mind can help me quickly adapt to and succeed in many new and unexpected situations.
While I primarily identify myself as a Biology teacher, this past year alone presented many career opportunities in which I worked as a middle- and secondary-school substitute teacher, a standardized test evaluator, a research writer for a publishing company, and even as a childcare assistant teacher for toddlers and preschool students. These positions were in new fields I did not have much experience with, but I took them on as challenges for the purpose of learning something new and to help widen my professional perspective in the multifaceted field of education.
With each position, I observed in multiple classroom learning environments and practiced different management styles; compiled strategies on how to work with standardized testing in the classroom; enhanced my mastery of key science concepts with research on government resources; and gained valuable insights in the total progression of child development and the effect of holistic instruction on learning values and positive behaviors. I had to learn quickly on my feet, but I was definitely learning a lot about different things! I found myself becoming more reflective about my own teaching beliefs and methods and looked for more ways to express more creativity in my instruction.
The biggest thing about my particular strength is that my versatility exposes me to a lot of new ideas, which excites me because it means it is an opportunity to improve myself. As a teacher, I believe it is important that students see how being flexible towards change can help them overcome any challenge. I want them to be inspired to try new things, and to dare taking risks in their learning. When they see me excited about my learning, they will be excited about their learning too. When everyone is excited about learning, it makes for a much more valuable and memorable experience!
